The New York State legislature has passed and the Governor has signed into law The COVID-19 Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2020. A part of this law directs that persons who received the Senior Low-Income exemption RPTL 467; or the Persons with disabilities and limited incomes, RPTL 459-c, do not have to file renewal applications in person at the Assessors’ office. The Assessor will renew the existing application for the 2021 assessment roll at the same rate granted for the 2020 assessment roll. There is no need to risk in person visits to the Assessor’s office during the pandemic.
If a taxpayer receiving the above exemptions feels that their income would justify a larger exemption then you can file an application to renew. You do not need to apply in person, you can contact the Assessors’ office for instructions on mailing or emailing the application and supporting documentation. No in person application is necessary. This would apply to anyone whom may be a first time applicant or is reapplying after having lost the exemption or if there is change in ownership.
