Now that the winter season is upon us, the Highway Department kindly asks for the residents’ cooperation to ensure everyone’s safety and to avoid hazardous road conditions. Please do not shovel or plow any snow from your property into the roadway. If you hire contractors for snow removal services, we kindly ask that you remind these contractors of this rule. Please Note: if any resident or contractor is seen plowing or shoveling snow onto any street or highway in the Town of Mount Pleasant, they will be subject to fines since this is both a safety hazard and a violation of Town Code.
As a reminder, per Town Code Section 206-17, vehicles are not permitted to be parked on any Town highway or street between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. from December 1st to April 1st. This is done to avoid congestion and facilitate the removal of snow and ice from Town highways during the winter season.
We ask residents to please be aware that if their mailbox lies within the Town right-of-way and if it is unfortunately damaged or knocked over during emergency snow plowing/removal operations, the Highway Department may replace it with a standard mailbox as a courtesy if timing allows. The Highway Department is not required and will not replace any damaged mailboxes with the exact same product that existed prior to the damage nor will they replace a mailbox that was damaged by private contractors.
Starting on February 1st, the Highway Department office will begin taking orders for the 2024 Compost Program. To place an order for compost, the office will need the following information:
- First and last name
- Full address
- Best contact number
- Specification for the size of the load you would like (small load or large load)
- Where the marker will be placed so that the driver knows where to dump the compost
It is important to note that this product is not topsoil; rather it is a combination of decomposed leaves from our Town leaf site. Compost is free of charge to the residents; however, please note that it is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis meaning that the earlier you call to place your order, the earlier you will receive it once deliveries begin. Deliveries should begin on or about the first or second week of April, weather permitting.
Leaf Collection/Brush Collection
At this time our loose leaves collection program has ended for all sections within the Town. However, crews will continuously go around to pick up bags of any remaining leaves throughout the winter months as often as time allows.
Looking ahead, spring is just around the corner! If you are considering purchasing a lawn mower, we urge you to please consider purchasing a mulching mower with an attempt to reduce the amount of bagged yard waste Town-wide.
Our annual Brush Collection Program will begin April 1st so please be sure to refer to the 2024 Sanitation and Recycling Booklet for the start dates in your area.
